Your World is Imaginary

There was a movie (I don't recall what movie) where the heroine was asked to stop her journey, just for a little while, and help. She was asked to take a pair of tweezers and move a pile of sand from one place to another. With tweezers! She did. While she was focusing on moving this pile of sand with an inadequate tool, she became so focused on moving that pile of sand, one granule at a time, she'd completely forgotten her journey and goal.

'Life is what you make it.' Popular saying. I would venture even further than that. Take just the concept of time, for example, I think time is a figment of our imagination. My time is different than most people's time. I work on a project until it is finished or until I'm tired. When I'm done with one project, I'd like another. I might even just take the afternoon off.

'Normal' people have time set for everything. I tried the nightmare of being a paralegal years ago. The people I worked with got their kids ready in the morning and rushed them to the elementary school, then rushed to work. They'd spend their day working until close to 5pm when they'd pack up and wait for the minute hand... then the second hand... to reach 5pm.

I felt like an alien watching this strange human ritual of staring at the clock every afternoon. They'd leave work, get something eat, watch a tv show, then go to bed and do it all again in the morning. What an awful way to live! 5 days a week. Every week. No thank you! I'd rather endless yet schedule-free hours of the self-employed.

When I get a new roommate they always ask, 'What time do you need to get up?' I just wake up. Clocks are something unnatural and unhealthy. Despite your convenient theories of the sun, even it does not come up like clock-work. The sun has a different rise and fall every day. And twice a year it changes completely (hince daylight savings time). Clocks are something control freaks came up with to manage everyone else.

Of course, we all age, but even much of that is a figment of our imaginations. 'You should act your age.' They normally mean you should act the age you look. People who look younger than their age get that comment less often than people who look older than their age. Age-defined actions are also something control freaks came up with to manage other people.

The worst imagination of time is always thinking we have time. We always think that we will take that vacation next year when things are more stable. We'll have a baby when we make enough money to support a family. People are always postponing life for their safe havens and conveniences.

Fact is, life is easiest where it's safest. Staying at this spot doing this thing, like moving that pile of sand. As we sit there in our convenient spot, we forget the journey we had expected out of life. It's called a life! Not a seat! You're supposed to LIVE! Unfortunately, risk and change are considered adverse behavior.

How often do you hear someone complain about their life? Their job, family or finances? I'll admit I'm guilty. I've almost made a career about it the last 7 months. Friends keep telling me, "You're in real estate!" I don't get it. "It's a recession! The worst real estate market in America's history!" You see, I wasn't having any problems in real estate until this year. Even last year was a record year. I suppose I'm not as above the fray as I thought.

My point is, I'm ready put down the tweezers. Time is what we make of it, and this life is all the time we have.
